The (Extra)ordinary COINS 2021: Leadership of Lithuanian Scientists in Global Context of Life Sciences

Lectures

First lecture (12:15 – 13:05) by Prof. Dr. Virginijus Šikšnys

Virginijus Šikšnys is the Chief Scientist and Head of the Department of Protein-DNA Interactions at the Vilnius University Institute of Biotechnology. For his work he has received numerous awards, including the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize, the Novozymes Prize and the Kavli prize. In the conference he will present a lecture “From CRISPR-Cas immunity to targeted genome editing”.

“In my talk I will discuss how basic research in the mechanisms of CRISPR-Cas immunity springboarded development of genome editing tools for engineering biology, and highlight future challenges and perspectives” – commented Prof. Dr. Virginijus Šikšnys on the lecture.

Second lecture (13:15 – 14:05) by Ingrida Olendraitė

Ingrida Olendraitė is a virologist and a research assistant at the University of Cambridge and she will present a lecture “How to find and understand a novel and divergent RNA virus”.

“RNA viruses cause a lot of medical and economic problems, as we have experienced this past year with SARS-CoV-2. Exploration of biodiversity and molecular mechanisms of a wide range of RNA viruses enlightens us and helps to be prepared for the unexpected. In this talk, I will cover the diversity of RNA viruses, their non-canonical molecular mechanisms, and an example of divergent RNA virus family.” – commented Ingrida Olendraitė on the lecture.
